Industrial Relations



The term ‘Industrial Relations’ comprises of two terms:  ‘Industry’ and ‘Relations’. “Industry” refers to “any productive activity in which an individual (or a group of individuals) is (are) engaged”. By “relations” we mean “the relationships that exist within the industry between the employer and his workmen.”
Basically the combination of the following can be regarded as ‘Industrial Relation’:-
(1)Relation between labor & machine (2)Relation between labor & labor (3)Relation between owner & owner (4)Relation between labor & owner
“The term Industrial relations explains the relationship between labor and management which is directly or indirectly based on the relationship between union & owner”–S.V. Agnihotri.
“Industrial relation is an art of living together for the purpose of production” –J.Henry

So, the term industrial relations explains the relationship between employees and management which stem directly or indirectly from union-employer relationship.
