*On the
basis of marriage:
i)Polygamous
family: When a man got married to more than one wife at a time is known as
polygamy. There is no marriage bond between the wives.
ii)Polyandrous
family: When a women got married to more than one husband at a time is
known as polyandry, There is no marriage bond between the husbands. Polyandry
can be seen in Nepal, Bhutan, and Northern India.
iii)Monogamous
family: An individual has one spouse during their lifetime. It’s the common
practice.
*On the
basis of nature of residence:
i)Family
of matrilocal residence: Is a social system in which a married couple
resides with or near the wife’s parents. This system is seen in Canyon, Kerala,
Southwestern China and Taiwan.
ii)Family
of patrilocal residence: Is a social system in which married couple resides
with or near the husbands parents. It is commonly seen in everywhere.
iii)Family
of changing residence: Is a social system in which married couple resides
neither near the wife’s parents nor near the husbands parents. This type seen
rarely.
*On the
basis of ancestry/descent:
i)Matrilineal
family: The family whose relation lies from the side of mother.
ii)Patrilineal
family: The family whose relation lies from the side of father.
*On the
basis of size/structure:
i)Nuclear
family: It is a type of family which consists of husband, wife and their
children.
ii)Joint
family: It is a type of family which consists of husband, wife and their
children with their grandfather, grandmother, uncle and aunt with their
children.
*On the
basis of nature of relationship:
i)Conjugal
family: It consists of adult members. There exist sex relationship.
ii)Consanguine
family: It consists of members among them exist blood relationship as
sister-brother etc.
