Classification of Banks


A)On the basis of function
=======================
1.Central banks: It is the top controlling bank of a country. It functions as controller of credit, issuing currency and notes. Ex-Bangladesh Bank
2.Commercial banks: The bank which essentially meant for providing short term credit to trade and industry is known commercial bank. Ex-Bank Asia
3.Industrial banks: Industrial bank helps industries to meet the long term capital requirements of industry, such as: plant, machinery etc
4.Agricultural banks: Agricultural bank usually provides credit to agricultural sector. Ex-BKB
5.Specialized bank: These banks concentrate on financing specialized economic and social sectors(small and cottage industries, landless people etc.) Ex-BASIC
6. Islami bank: These banks operates their banking business based on the shariah or islami principles.

7. Co-operative bank: It provides short term loan to agricultural sector. Ex-Bangladesh Samabay Bank limited

B)On the basis of ownership

1.Fully government owned-Sonali bank
2.Denationalized bank-Rupali bank
3.Private-Prime bank, City bank
4.Joint venture-DBBL, IFIC
  
C)On the basis of origin
==================
1. Local bank: These are registered and incorporated in Bangladesh
Ex-Prime bank
2. Foreign bank: These are registered and incorporated outside of Bangladesh but operated in Bangladesh.

D)On the basis of non-banking financial   institutions

1. Merchant banking companies: These  helps the business house or government corporation in raising capital from the open market through share capital, debenture etc.
Ex-Some of the commercial banks
2.HBFC: These are the companies which extend medium and long term finance to build houses and apartments in the government sector.

3. Investment and finance companies: These doesn't has the capability like all the bank(accept deposit, use cheques). But they can raise their fund and own paid up capital
4. Leasing companies: These are engaged in leasing activities in the areas like industrial machineries, medical equipments etc.

5.Stock exchange: Stock exchange is the institutions where shares and stocks can be bought and sold at market prices by the shareholders through stock brokers.
